Sustainable Darkroom Charitable Trustee Open Call

Sustainable Darkroom is looking for 2 new trustees to join our board. Sustainable Darkroom is an artist-led, grassroots charity specialising in research, training, and mutual learning, equipping cultural practitioners with new skills and knowledge to develop an eco-friendly photographic practice. We aim for a total transformation of the way photographers work, think, and exist in the living world.

Taking its form in workshops, talks, symposiums, training sessions, publications and residencies, we are currently leading the movement in challenging the environmental impact and sustainability of photography.

We are looking for two new board members with strong environmental values and a commitment to our manifesto and charitable objectives to join our team, working closely with co-directors Hannah Fletcher and Edd Carr to support and advise us as the charity evolves.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Strong understanding of or experience within analogue photography and/or analogue filmmaking.
  • A critical understanding of ecology and environmental crisis.
  • Financial management experience (if applying for trustee to serve as treasure).
  • Communication skills.

Understanding and/or experience of charitable governance is valuable, but we welcome applications from those new to the sector and keen to apply themselves in the role.

Notes on the role:


  • You do not have to be based in the UK to apply for this role. We welcome applications from those based overseas.
  • Meetings are held 4 times a year on zoom with occasional (optional) opportunities to gather in-person at events.

  • We are also seeking trustees that are determined to promote and develop the objects of the charity outside the annual meetings, within their own experience and sectors.
  • Legally trustees cannot be paid, so this is a voluntary role.
